Education department to intervene in #Koffiefontein─── CATHY DLODLO 06:54 Mon, 19 Nov 2018
The Free State Education Department is expected to intervene in the ongoing protests in Koffiefontein that let to the shutting down of schools.
This follows after provincial Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, expressed concern over learners who are roaming the streets of this Free State mining town, while others across the country are in the midst of their end-of-year exams. OFM News' Cathy Dlodlo reports that gates at the three schools have been locked for about six weeks.
Makgoe says he is planning to meet with stakeholders to see if they can reach an agreement. Residents are demanding the resignation of the mayor and councillors.
OFM News was in the town, where burnt tyres and barricaded roads are evident of a strike gone violent. The police confirmed to OFM News that two vehicles and a house have been set alight, and one person was also attacked by angry community members.
