Low dam levels and water restrictions are some of the problems residents at the Rustenburg Local Municipality in North West are experiencing.

However, according to municipal spokesperson, David Magae, these water restrictions are intentional as it is just one way the municipality is making sure it that water levels are restored and that water supplies are not depleted.

Magae told OFM News that with the region experiencing low rainfall and facing the pressures of a growing metropolis, this is just one way the municipality is doing its part in ensuring that it does not completely run out of water - much in the same way Cape Town did over the last year.

"Residents and businesses alike in our jurisdiction use a lot of water, so it has impacted severely on our infrastructure and supply of water, including the water we get from other water boards such as the Magalies Water and Rand water boards.

"As a result, the municipality had to impose water restrictions in a number of areas in Rustenburg to ensure that during the times when you don't have water access, the reservoirs and dams are able to fill up," said Magae.

Last week Friday, the municipality revealed that the Magalies Water Board was experiencing low damn levels due to high water demand in the Vaalkop system. This resulted in immediate implementation of water rationing to prevent a depletion of water supply within the system.
