Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, told OFM News the students will appear on Tuesday, after they were arrested after they disrupted examinations on Monday, which was a contravention of an existing court order that states that protesting students cannot disrupt ongoing classes or exams.

It is alleged protests flared up after students allegedly disrupted exams owing to issues involving growing calls for SRC elections, which should have taken place last month.

Examinations, which were set to begin on Monday, came to a standstill as students were chased out of examination centres by groups demanding an election of the SRC. The university’s spokesperson, Dan Maritz, told OFM News the 2018 elections - that were supposed to take place on September 12 - did not happen as planned due to matters beyond the IEC’s control, as a dispute was logged by one of the participating student political organisations.  

He says an interim structure will be put in place to deal with students’ academic affairs, and that the elections will take place early next year.

The CUT Management has since then appealed for calm at the campus so that exams can resume on Tuesday.
