Details of Bongani Hospital investigation might come to light─── CATHY DLODLO 08:16 Fri, 12 Oct 2018
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Health met with the Office of the Health Ombudsman and received an update on some the investigations by this office – including the progress with the final report on Bongani Hospital in Welkom.
Health Ombudsman, Malegapuru Makgoba, said earlier this year - in an interview with OFM News – that the investigation into the death of five babies in October 2015 is in its final stage. Free State Health Department found three years ago during an internal investigation that earlier indications that the infants died of Klebsiella infections found to be wrong. It found that the four had low birth weights and died from pulmonary haemorrhage, which is bleeding in the lungs. The fifth one apparently died from birth asphyxia. The death of the babies rocked the already crippled health services in the Free State. The investigation was initiated by the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) a year ago and was then moved to the priority list of Makgoba’s office just days after his appointment.
