Cash-strapped Fezile Dabi under scrutiny─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:27 Wed, 10 Oct 2018
The troubled Fezile Dabi District Municipality, which include Sasolburg, is expected to come under scrutiny by the Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts in the Free State Legislature.
Legislature spokesperson, Life Mokone, says the committee will address the media tomorrow on the outcomes of today’s meeting held in Sasolburg. Committee Chairperson, Neels van Rooyen, indicated previously that the MPLs had serious concerns about the state of affairs at the municipality and invited Human Settlements MEC, Oupa Khoabane, to appear before them. He, however, snubbed the meeting for a second time. Mokone says the committee has concluded that issues at the municipality need serious attention.
Khoabane and his office are yet to comment.
“The issues at Fezile Dabi district, according to members of the committee, requires that they brief the media directly to be able to clarify some of the issues that are coming up at Fezile Dabi,” says Mokone.
Mokone says he was informed that MEC Khoabane submitted a written apology and the committee was comfortable with the reasons provided to them.
He says the committee earlier resolved to undertake an oversight visit to the municipality and expected to be addressed by the MEC on 5 October 2018 at the municipality after he agreed to meet with the Portfolio Committee on the proposed date but it was disappointed by the no-show of the MEC.
The committee adds Khoabane wrongly prioritised the inauguration in the Eastern Cape Province at the expense of a volatile and unstable situation at the municipality.
