Two miners die at Harmony Gold’s Joel mine | News Article

Two miners have died at Harmony Gold’s Joel mine near Theunissen in the Free State today.

The mining company said the incident happened this morning in a seismically related fall of ground occurrence.

Harmony Gold spokesperson, Sihle Maake, says the miners - aged 51 and 58 respectively - succumbed to their injuries and their bodies were recovered at around 11 am.

Maake says the family members of the deceased have since been notified, but they are unable to release the names of the two workers.

She says the company extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. An investigation into the deaths is currently underway.

The fatalities come just over a month after Harmony Gold Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Peter Steenkamp, told OFM News the company was working on preventative actions, specifically risk assessment related to fatalities at their operations.

This after Harmony recorded eight fatalities at its operations in the six-month period, ending December 31, 2017.

Steenkamp said their fatality numbers were hit hard by the rock fall at Kusalethu mine in Gauteng last year August where five mineworkers lost their lives in the single incident.

He revealed at the time, that there were plans to deepen the Joel mine.
