The municipality's Communications Manager, dr. Gino Alberts, says Luigi Gaigher, a DA councillor of Ward 18 in Sasolburg, was killed and Kamohelo Thulo from the Fezile Dabi District Municipality was injured when their car seemingly collided head-on with another car. They were on their way to a meeting in Bloemfontein on Saturday morning. Alberts says Gaigher died on the scene while Thulo was airlifted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, Gauteng. He says the Executive Mayor of Metsimaholo, Lindiwe Tshongwe, is saddened by Gaigher's untimely death.

Alberts says Thulo's condition at this stage is still not known but the municipality wants to wish him a speedy recovery.

Funeral arrangements for Gaigher are not known at this stage.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Nick Dollman, said at the weekend paramedics responded to a serious collision at about 07:00 on Saturday. Paramedics attended to three male victims on the scene. Two sustained serious injuries and a man in his twenties was transported by the Provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to a local hospital. Thulo was airlifted by a Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance to Johannesburg, says Dollman.

Gaigher was declared dead on the scene.
