Former Bloemfontein Mayor laid to rest tomorrow─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 11:12 Fri, 29 Dec 2017
The funeral of the former mayor of Bloemfontein, Jani Mohapi, will be held in Mangaung on Saturday.
The 84-year-old was mayor between 1994 and 2000, as well as the transitional period before the first democratic elections were held. Mohapi was sentenced to Robben Island in 1987. He was also a founding member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and a Speaker of the Free State Provincial Legislature.
Mohapi passed away after a short illness at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria last week. According to ANC’s Monna-Pule Ntamo, Mohapi improved the lives of workers as a unionist.
Ntamo said that Mohapi also helped to nurture young leaders in the province. “He has contributed to the lives of workers in Mangaung and South Africa, who were exploited. Mohapi played a role in politicising and liberating those people. He showed them how to fight for their own rights,” explained Ntamo.
