#Metsimaholo warns against councillors’ no-show─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 12:25 Wed, 13 Dec 2017
The Metsimaholo Municipality’s special council sitting is expected to take place next week Thursday after 22 of the 42 elected councillors failed to show up for the meeting yesterday.
The much-anticipated first council meeting was to see councillors being sworn in and a new mayor elected after the by-elections last month. This led to the council meeting not forming a quorum.
Municipal spokesperson, Gino Alberts, says prospective councillors who did not attend the meeting included those from the ANC, SACP, AAC, Forum For Service Delivery and Metsimaholo Civic Association.
Following yesterday's no-show by the majority of elected councillors, Alberts says the councillors will soon be served with notices explaining the importance of attending, and should they fail to pitch next week, then the municipality will take further steps.
The by-elections in the municipality last month came after the municipality’s council was dissolved following its failure to adopt its budget within the legally prescribed time frame earlier this year.
The by-elections have, however, also confirmed that the municipality is in the same position it was after last year’s elections, with no outright winner.
