Lack of chronic medication still a concern in rural areas─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:33 Tue, 14 Nov 2017
The lack of HIV and TB medication in public healthcare facilities continues to plague several impoverished and rural based communities.
This is according to the Stop Stockout Project (SSP). Research conducted by the organisation primarily focuses on the shortage of essential medicine and children’s vaccines throughout the country.
Research conducted in the Free State reveal that several HIV medication stockout cases have been reported and the problem has been persistent for more than three months. It also indicates that in some cases facilities awaiting stock have turned away patients.
The Provincial MEC for Health, Butana Komphela, has, however, recently admitted to the Free State Legislature’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) that his department has noted all the medication and medical personnel shortages faced by his department and are working on redressing these issues.
