The North West Health Department has been dealt a blow by adverse findings contained in a public protector report.
The report has been released 14 years after the complainant, Godfrey Maseng, lost his mother, Ziphora Maseng, at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital. It details the hospital’s failure to provide urgent medical attention for Maseng, when she was admitted to the hospital on May 29 2003, leading to her death.
The department is also found to have failed to respond to a complaint lodged by Godfrey Maseng on April 22nd 2004. Mkhwebane’s remedial action includes an ex gratia payment of R50 000.
This comes after the Department’s Spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, spoke to OFM news last month, saying the department is plagued by debt and the budget is exhausted. Lekgethwane at the time was reacting to information released by Stats SA revealing that the province spent the second least on health care in the country in comparison to other provinces.
