Gauteng police have confirmed that two suspects were arrested shortly after a 53-year-old farmer was shot this afternoon on his farm about 15km from Fochville in the direction of Parys in the Free State.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, says according to information the farmer was approached by two unknown men while he was outside on his farm.
Dlamini says the men asked for drinking water after which one of them took out a firearm and shot the farmer. He was later declared dead by paramedics. The two men ran away but were apprehended by the deceased’s neighbours who handed them over to police.
Police are still searching for the firearm used in the incident.
Sarel van der Wat from the local safety group in the Fochville area earlier told OFM News from the scene the farmer and a farmworker were busy fixing a fence not far from the farmhouse at about 13:00 when they were approached by two men.
The farmworker was unharmed.
According to Van der Wat the farmer was shot in the chest.
