Northern Cape Police have arrested about ten suspects, including two women, in connection with the possession of illegal Rock Lobster, drugs, the possession of dangerous weapons and illegal mining.
These arrests were made during Operation Phakisa which started last Thursday and ended yesterday. It included police conducting vehicle checkpoints, visits to mines and an abalone farm in Port Nolloth, Alexander Bay, and Springbok. Police spokesperson, Dimakatso Mooi, says the operation was a multi-disciplinary approach by the Departments of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the State Security Agency and Customs.
Operation Phakisa was implemented across the country since last week and was initiated in an effort to curb crimes related to marine life and nature conservation.
She says drugs to the value of R6000 and a stolen trailer were confiscated. The ten suspects are expected to appear in various courts today. Cluster Commander of Namakwa, Brig. Francis Hender, has applauded the commitment of all roleplayers in the intensified and intelligence-driven operation.
