Drug and substance abuse under spotlight in North West─── 15:54 Fri, 09 Jun 2017
The police in the North West say a programme aimed at combating drug abuse among the youth is underway.
Drug and substance abuse came under the spotlight in Potchefstroom earlier today. This comes after the towns of Ikageng and Potchefstroom were identified as areas where there is a high prevalence of drug abuse.
The Deputy Provincial Commissioner, GP Asaneng, said most substance abuse cases were registered in the two towns. Speaking at a Community Awareness Campaign at Promosa Sports Ground, Asaneng said the majority of arrests involve the youth which include all races and backgrounds. He added that they are trying to ensure that the learners and students do not engage in drug-related activities. Asaneng added that there is a need to educate parents and guardians on how to deal with the issues of children who abuse substances.
