Public Protector to update Bapo-Ba-Mogale on investigation into missing royalties─── 10:35 Mon, 27 Mar 2017
Brits - The Public Protector will today provide an update of her investigation into missing Bapo-Ba-Mogale mining royalties that are suspected to have been systematically looted.
Busiswe Mkhwebane will visit the community near Brits in North West regarding her probe into the so-called “D account”. The account, into which mining companies pay royalties for communities on whose ancestral land they mine, had once accumulated R617 million, but is now in the red.
Mkhwebane's spokesperson, Oupa Segalwe says the Public Protector is also investigating the alleged abuse of resources relating to the construction of Kgosi Edward Mogale's palace.
In 2012, the community asked former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, to investigate allegations of systematic looting of the collective resources of the community. In October last year, Madonsela said her office had already identified individuals and companies to whom payments were made from the communal funds.
