Bloemfontein Golf Club to step up security after robbery─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 11:23 Wed, 11 Jan 2017
Bloemfontein - Management of the Bloemfontein Golf Club has given their assurance that safety measures will be put in place following an armed robbery involving two golfers at the weekend.
A member of the club and a visitor playing with him were approached by two men on Sunday between 14:00 and 15:00 while they were between the fifth and sixth hole.
Club manager, Dewald Smit, says one of the robbers was armed and threatened the players with a visible firearm while demanding money. He says the robbers fled the scene on foot with the cash. According to him the victims immediately reported the incident to the club, after which police reacted swiftly. Smit says it was an isolated incident.
There were isolated problems in the past, but not to the extent that a firearm was involved and used to threaten people. “We are aware that it can happen again that is why we need to step up.”
Extra security officers will be deployed to patrol the course during the day.
