Lesotho nationals have until after Christmas to apply for special permits | News Article

Bloemfontein - Lesotho nationals, who are residing and/or working in South Africa illegally, have now until after Christmas to apply for a Lesotho Special Permit.

This follows after Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, agreed to extend the deadline for applications for a second time. The permit is issued under a special dispensation for Lesotho nationals who are working, studying or running businesses in South Africa and had done so before 30 September 2015 without the necessary documents.

The application process was opened at the beginning of the year and was originally supposed to close in June. Gigaba, however, announced that he acceded to a request by Lesotho authorities to extend the closing date of applications to September and then to December 31.

This request follows after the Lesotho government was inundated with applications for identity documents required for the application for the Special Permit.

More than 102 000 Lesotho nationals have already submitted their online application.
