Pretoria - The South African National Defence Force has provided details of the two SANDF casualties in an ambush in Northern Darfur, Sudan.

On Wednesday, a military convoy providing a security escort for humanitarian aid trucks was ambushed at about 8pm while on the way to an exchange point between SANDF and Rwandan troops.

According to spokesperson, Xolani Mabanga, the SANDF member who was fatally shot was Corporal Mxolisi Edward Mnyipika.

The soldier who was shot and wounded was Rifleman Cebo Excellent Gumede. He is still in hospital in El Fashir and in a stable condition.

Details of Mnyipika’s memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

Both soldiers were based at 8 South African Infantry Battalion in Upington in the Northern Cape.

Meanwhile, a South African Air Force helicopter has been damaged by unidentified gunfire in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mabanga says that on Friday an Oryx helicopter came under unprovoked gunfire from an unidentified ground attacker while conducting routine aerial patrols.

The helicopter suffered minor structural damage after being hit by a small firearm projectile.

The crew and all members on-board at the time of the incident were not injured.
