Postmasburg - The 45-bed Postmasburg Hospital in the Northern Cape only has one doctor who is almost never off duty.
This was revealed to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, who yesterday described the hospital as one of the worst she had seen.
Madonsela is visiting the Northern Cape as part of her national stakeholder dialogue program.
Health officials told her plans were in place to appoint two more permanent and a few sessional doctors but they were struggling to attract health care professionals.
One of the reasons is a lack of staff quarters.
The current doctor was staying in a converted garage.
Madonsela says her office will help provincial authorities to work out plans to address the problems and oversee the implementation thereof.
Madonsela will be in the Kimberley area today and tomorrow.
