The South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) is the prime organisation responsible for advancing disability sports in South Africa. President of SASAPD, Jean Miggles, joins Yolanda Maartens to share their vision.

In conversation with Yolanda Maartens, Jean Miggles, President of the SASAPD, motivates listeners to support the para-athletes at the national championships taking place in March. She shares her message of motivation for participating athletes and urges businesses to get involved by providing financial support to these athletes.

The SASAPD was established with the vision of creating equal opportunities for athletes with physical and visual impairments. Over the years, they grew to become the leading custodian of para-sports in the country, stating that their mission is to empower athletes at all levels – grassroots to elite – to fulfil their sporting potential and represent South Africa on the global stage.

SASAPD plays a pivotal role in the development and success of para-sports through athlete classification, identifying and developing talent, as well as producing world-class competitors.

Only approved organisation for athlete classification in SA

They have done this, and continue to do so, by being the only approved organisation for athlete classification in South Africa, ensuring fair and equal competition in alignment with international standards.

From junior to senior levels, the SASAPD actively identifies, nurtures, and supports the development of future Paralympians and over the years, has delivered multiple Paralympic and World Champions, showcasing South Africa’s talent and dedication to excellence.

In conversation with Yolanda Maartens, Jean Miggles highlights SASAPD’s commitment to promoting sports participation across all provinces in South Africa to create opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities. This speaks to their heart for the development of athletes, physically as well as holistically.

They support and encourage athletes to pursue and achieve their full potential through participation in provincial, national, and international competitions.

A massive part they do can be seen and experienced through the SASAPD Flagship Event: The Annual National Championships.

Taking place from 28 March to 1 April 2025 in Gqeberha, the Annual National Championships is the highlight of the disability sports calendar, bringing together para-athletes from across South Africa and neighbouring countries. This prestigious event provides a platform for athletes to compete against their peers, set new records, and qualify for international competitions. Nations like Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Namibia regularly participate, with growing interest from other African countries such as Kenya and Mozambique as well.
