Residents of Central South Africa have been warned to limit outdoor activities during extremely hot weather.

The South African Weather Service predicts heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the central and eastern parts of both the Free State and North West. It issued a yellow level 2 warning for the northeastern Free State on Monday (14/10), and residents should expect severe thunderstorms with excessive lightning.

Who’s most at risk?

“Too much heat is dangerous for everyone’s health. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are especially vulnerable to heat stress,” said Goldman Medical Centre doctor Marlin McKay.

Tips to keep in mind during a heatwave

  • Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. Avoid excessive alcohol and coffee as they can lead to dehydration;
  • Ensure animals have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink as well;
  • Try to keep out of direct sunlight, make sure you have sunscreen on, wear hats, and sunglasses, and use an umbrella in direct sunlight;
  • Dress in cool, lightweight clothes which are not constricting;
  • Limit participation in outdoor activities between 10:00 and 16:00;
  • Avoid strenuous activities, or do them early in the morning or late in the evening;
  • Try to stay indoors in a well-ventilated or air-conditioned room;
  • Close the curtains during the hottest parts of the day and open windows at night to cool down the house;
  • Knowing how hot and humid it is going to help plan outside activities;
  • Know how to get help. Note down the contact information for the nearest healthcare provider and ambulance.

There are three different heat-related illnesses that people can get because of being exposed to high temperatures during a heatwave:

  • Heatstroke, the signs are an extremely high temperature and rapid strong pulse;
  • Heat cramps, the signs are muscle pains or spasms in the stomach, arms, and legs;
  • Heat exhaustion, the signs are heavy sweating, dizziness, fainting, and muscle cramps.
