The 2024 finalists, the Durban Super Giants, will be targeting a fast start this season when they face the Pretoria Capitals on Friday in their first game of the SA20.

Last year, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat the Super Giants by 89 runs in a one-sided final at Newlands in Cape Town, remaining the only team to win South Africa’s premier T20 competition.

The Super Giants will be captained by Proteas front-line spinner Keshav Maharaj. They boast domestic stars such as big-hitting Heinrich Klaasen and Quinton de Kock, as well as Wiaan Mulder, Prenelan Subrayen, Jon-Jon Smuts, Matthew Breetzke, and Jason Smith. Their impressive international lineup includes New Zealand great Kane Williamson, Shamar Joseph of the West Indies, Chris Woakes of England, and Marcus Stoinis of Australia.

Last year, the team from the East Coast proved they have what it takes to reach the final, and they will be drawing confidence from that experience. Maharaj, who will play a massive role in their success both as a bowler and a leader, said the team is quietly confident heading into their campaign and welcomes the experience of players like Black Caps captain Kane Williamson.

“I've been chatting to Lance Klusener, and that has been really good,” said the seasoned spinner.

“Obviously, the weather hasn't helped in Durban, but we still have the facilities to make use of what we can. Personally, I’m really excited to learn from someone like Kane Williamson. He's been around the world and has done really well as a leader.

“So, to dive into his knowledge and gain insights into how he approaches leadership would be good for me. I'm also excited to see the youngsters that have joined our lineup – players like CJ King and Bryce Parsons. After last year's SA20, Bryce went on to dominate the domestic T20 competition, so we’re really excited and just want to bring good energy.”

Play at Kingsmead in Durban is scheduled to get underway at 17:30 on Friday.

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 13:00, the Paarl Royals will face the Sunrisers at Boland Park, and at 17:30, the Joburg Super Kings will take on MI Cape Town at the Wanderers. In the opening match on Thursday night, MI Cape Town made a big statement with a convincing 97 run win against the Sunrisers at St George’s Park.
