New Proteas coach Mashimbyi wants to up the intensity─── MORGAN PIEK 13:02 Tue, 03 Dec 2024
The new Proteas Women’s coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, will join the national team in Kimberley on Tuesday as he begins preparing for his tenure in charge.
On Friday, Mashimbyi was appointed as the new head coach, taking over the reins from Dillon du Preez, who has been serving as the interim coach.
For now, the team remains under Du Preez's guidance as they are engaged in a One-Day International series against England, starting on Wednesday in Kimberley, while later in the month they will play in a standalone Test in Bloemfontein.
The former Knights all-rounder, Du Preez, assumed the role following Hilton Moreeng's resignation earlier this year. Like Moreeng and Du Preez, Mashimbyi also has roots in Free State cricket, where he played as a fast bowler. He later represented the Titans both as a player and as a head coach.
While shadowing the team, Mashimbyi emphasized the importance of raising the Proteas’ intensity moving forward.
“I've definitely been reflecting over the last few weeks on where I believe the team can go,” said Mashimbyi.
“For me, the key is to see a united team, one that enjoys being together. It’s about creating an environment that nurtures players and allows them to reach their full potential.
“Once we achieve that, I am confident we’ll become an unstoppable force in cricket. Additionally, we need to establish processes, both philosophically and practically, regarding how we train and play.
“The public will see this transformation in the team’s attitude and the intensity they bring to every game. That’s my priority—ensuring we play with purpose and high energy.”
The first One-Day International between South Africa and England at the Diamond Oval is scheduled to start on Wednesday at 14:00.
