“I’d said just try and be maybe 5% better I wouldn't say 10% better, but I think that will be left to this week when we reassess this game that’s happened and see how we can get better going forward into the next one.”

The Proteas will target an improved performance this week when they face the West Indies in the second and final Test played in Guyana.

On Sunday, the first Test in Trinidad & Tobago ended in a draw. However, had it not been for seven sessions missed because of rain, South Africa could have claimed the win.

The spinner, Keshav Maharaj, who took eight wickets in Port of Spain told OFM Sport they can improve.

“We haven’t had a chance to actually debrief and I think that will be left to when we get to Guyana. But having said that, maybe a few soft dismissals here and there from the first innings is something that we can really pride ourselves on and change going forward.

“And then, potentially with the ball, maybe just limit a few boundary options. If I’m going to be hypercritical on everything, it’s just obvious, the wicket wasn’t offering much, but, I think that may be the one thing that we can improve on as the bowling unit.

“I’d said just try and be maybe 5% better I wouldn't say 10% better, but I think that will be left to this week when we reassess this game that’s happened and see how we can get better going forward into the next one.”

Maharaj added that while they didn’t get the result they wanted in Trinidad & Tobago, they will take confidence out of the provinces and build on that. “I think we can be proud considering the amount of cricket as it was seven sessions lost in the last five days and to be able to put ourselves in a position to make a game of it,” said Maharaj.

“I think there is a lot of confidence we can take from that. Outcomes of cricket are unpredictable, but we obviously had the upper hand at the time and maybe another session or two could have gone our way. But having said that, I think overall was a great advert for Test cricket.”

Play in Providence is scheduled to start at 16:00 on Thursday.
