Mother Nature victorious in SA20 opener─── 09:58 Thu, 11 Jan 2024
It wasn’t the start the organisers, players or most of all, fans, were hoping for to the SA20 series. Rain had the final say in Gqeherba, with the match eventually abandoned without a ball being bowled.
There will, however, be some SA20 action today in Durban where the Durban Super Giants will clash with MI Cape Town.
Durbanite Grant Roelofson, who is playing for MI Cape Town this year, says as a home-boy he had some insight into conditions in Durban to share with his new team.
“Our squad is a ‘no stone unturned’ kind of squad and me as the local boy I’ve obviously tried to give as much as I can. ”
Roelofson says he believes the SA20 could become as popular as India’s IPL.
“I’ve not been to the IPL, but this competition is the biggest thing I’ve been part of. I think just the reception we have gotten from who guys who have come in from overseas was great. As South Africans, we love our sport and it’s great to go around the country and see the crowds come out in numbers. So I reckon it’s a competition that’s right up there.”
MI Cape Town captain, Kieron Pollard, says he hopes to lead his team to greater heights this year, but also to guide younger players to build on their careers.
“From a team perspective, we didn’t do as well as we should have in last year’s competition. So we just want to give the fans something to cheer about. As for myself, I’m in the twilight of my career where it’s now about enjoyment and about passing on something to the younger guys; giving them the opportunity to play around the world and then sit back and take the world by storm.”
More rain is expected in Durban today, but if play goes ahead as planned the match will start at 5:30 PM.
