De Kock shines at Cricket World Cup─── KAYLA BARKER 04:42 Sun, 05 Nov 2023
Quinton de Kock has become the first South African to score more than 500 runs in a single World Cup tournament. The current leading run-scorer with 545 runs aims to end his ODI career on a high.
The Proteas 190-run victory over NZ earlier this week saw not only the team edge closer to the semi-finals but also De Kock’s fourth century of the tournament. De Kock’s inspiring performance and determination to end his ODI career on a high has definitely inspired the squad.
Alongside Rassie van der Dussen, the pair made all the difference against the Black Caps scoring a partnership of 200 setting up the 357/4 win.
Speaking about De Kock, the man of the match from the 190-run win against New Zealand, Rassie van der Dussen, said "He has a determination about him that I haven’t seen in a very long time. He is ploughing back into the team in all aspects; at the bowling meetings and at the batting meetings. Being one of the senior guys, everyone really feeds off him.”
Currently for the Proteas, one of their major strengths at the World Cup this year has been their ability to do the basics well, while also not panicking when the pressure is on. They also currently have by far the best net run rate in the World Cup and this enhances their chances of securing the top-spot.
A win for the Protas will secure their place in the knockout rounds, but even if they lose, they will then just need to be Afghanistan. While that is not a given, the way the Proteas have played, it shouldn't be an issue.
India became the first team to secure their spot in the semi-finals following their convincing 302-run victory against Sri Lanka in Mumbai yesterday.
They still have games against their top competitor, India, as well as Afghanistan. Only one win is needed to secure their spot in the semi-finals.
With results like De Kock’s there is a lot of hope for the side as they edge closer to the end.
The Proteas come up against India today in Chennai at 10:30.
