Senior managers of the North West Education Department are visiting the family of a primary school learner from Ramosadi village in Mahikeng who died after falling ill at school.
The department has provided counselling services to teachers and learners of the school following the death of the Grade 3 learner on Friday (12/4), said Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.
OFM News previously reported the learner is believed to have died after allegedly consuming snacks purchased from a local vendor. Shortly after arriving at school, two children began showing signs of illness. The school immediately arranged emergency medical assistance.
The siblings were rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital. The younger child was declared dead on arrival, while the Grade 5 learner remains in the ICU.
The exact cause of their condition has not yet been confirmed, while preliminary information from the surviving learner suggests they had eaten snacks bought from a local shop the day before.
The department is awaiting the results of medical and toxicology tests to determine the cause of the tragedy. Molokwane said MEC Viola Motsumi’s visit is aimed at offering support to the bereaved family and school community during this difficult time.
