Free State Education assures no disruptions to medical aid─── ZENANDE MPAME 12:25 Wed, 19 Mar 2025

The Free State Department of Education has assured all education employees that medical aid payments will be processed within the first two weeks of April to ensure uninterrupted coverage.
The department received confirmation from the provincial treasury that all necessary payments to third-party providers will be made to maintain continuous benefits.
Previously, the department faced criticism for failing to pay medical aid contributions, leaving between 20,000 and 30,000 teachers in the province without access to healthcare. “We remain committed to fulfilling our legal obligations to the Government Employees Medical Scheme (Gems) and ensuring that our employees receive the benefits they deserve,” said department spokesperson Howard Ndaba.
“We assure all Gems members that their benefits will continue uninterrupted, and payments to third-party providers will be made within the first 14 days of April, ensuring seamless continuity of services.”
The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) accused the department of deducting contributions from employees but failing to transfer the funds to Gems.
Gems had set a compliance deadline for Monday (10/3), which the department failed to meet. The Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU) demanded accountability, saying they would support legal action if other unions decided to pursue it.
Naptosa Executive Director Basil Manuel said: “In our discussions with Gems and other stakeholders, the department appears to have promised payment before the end of the month. However, this is unacceptable – it should never have been in arrears.
“It violates the LRA, breaches employees’ trust, and causes unnecessary stress.”
Naptosa confirmed that it would monitor the situation closely and asked the Department of Labour why the issue was allowed to arise in the first place. Ndaba emphasised the department values the hard work and dedication of its employees and remains committed to supporting their well-being through its benefits programme.
