Seven suspects in Bloemfontein court for public violence after soccer match─── ZENANDE MPAME 06:00 Tue, 04 Mar 2025

Seven suspects will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property after disturbing a soccer match at the Free State stadium.
In videos doing the rounds on social media, a large crowd of football fans can be seen forcing their way into the stadium and breaking the gate on Saturday (1/3).
After the match was concluded, fans also invaded the pitch to celebrate Marumo Gallants’ biggest win of the season in the Premier Soccer League by beating Orlando Pirates 2-0.
“We appeal to the public to work with us to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable sporting experience for all,” said Free State police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli. “We urge all attendees to behave responsibly and refrain from engaging in any acts of violence, vandalism, or public disorder.”
“During the previous match, seven individuals were arrested for malicious damage to property and public violence, four children were reported lost after they were separated from their parents, and later reunited.”
For any upcoming games, we urge game attendees to follow the instructions of police officers and security personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, he said.
Because of the high number of people attending games at the stadium, parents and guardians are strongly advised to keep a close watch on their children at all times to prevent them from becoming lost.
Meanwhile, the South African Rugby Union announced that the Free State was downgraded to a Class C venue by SA Rugby for Springbok Test matches. This means the city is unlikely to host high-profile international games in the future.
Rapport reported the city may still host test matches. The main reasons given for the downgrade are Bloemfontein’s restricted flight and choice of accommodation, which are both essential when organising major international events.
“Individuals without valid tickets are strictly advised not to approach the stadium perimeter,” said Kareli. “Access will be denied, and those attempting to gain unauthorized entry will face legal consequences. A strong police presence from different units dealt with crowd management at the stadium on Sunday (2/3) to maintain order and address any potential disturbances.”
