Motorists and pedestrians across North West have been urged to be on high alert after the weather service issued a severe weather alert for disruptive rainfall.

The severe weather conditions are expected to last until Thursday (20/2). Following heavy rains, disaster management teams across the province remain on high alert.

No major incidents have yet been reported, but some of the roads are flooded, said Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Media Liaison Officer, Lerato Gambu.

He said the Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to monitor the situation. “Motorists and pedestrians are advised to be extra vigilant and cautious on flooded roads.

“They must also avoid crossing flooded bridges, streams, and rivers as it might be dangerous to do so. Motorists must put their headlights on to avoid accidents,” he added.

Gambu urged the public to continue to monitor weather alerts on radio, television, and other communication. For any incident, residents can contact the provincial disaster management centre on 018 388 3888 or 0800 018 000.

Some 170 families were left homeless and one person died during the floods of 2022. Infrastructure including roads, schools, and houses was destroyed.

Following the disruptive floods, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Water, and Sanitation Pam Tshwete said R54.9 million had been allocated to the province to build new houses in Deelpan and surrounding areas.

A year later, the then MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosh, said 103 new houses were being built for flood victims in Tswaing Municipality.
