The Free State provincial government continues to prioritise education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem) by donating and supporting learners across the province.

Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Dibolelo Mance launched the back-to-school campaign at St Bernard’s Secondary School in Bochabela on Thursday (30/1) and donated maths and science kits to learners.

This back-to-school campaign demonstrates the MEC’s dedication to giving children the resources they need to succeed, particularly as the province keeps emphasising Stem education.

“The intention of the programme is simply to ensure that schools are run effectively and efficiently and to ensure that learning and teaching are taking place,” said Mance. “We chose St Bernard’s because it is one of the schools that is still teaching science and maths, as the department our mandate is predominantly focusing on build and science industry.”

With the help of these kits, learners in Grade 12 will be able to succeed in these crucial subjects, which are essential in the quickly evolving world of today, she said.

These donations reflect the department’s ongoing efforts to provide material support and also inspire a passion for Stem subjects.

The department will also join schools doing technical subjects such as drawing, and contribute towards their efficiency by donating drawing and maths kits.

“However, as the department, we are proud to say this particular school has been able to produce above 90% in the 2024 outcomes of the matric results. We, therefore, wish them well in the 2025 academic year, and we are hopeful that the tools we have provided will play a significant role in making sure that they do well in their matric results.”

The department appreciated the contribution of the Central University of Technology which committed to contributing towards the training of teachers and learners throughout the 2025 academic year.
