The Sol Plaatje Municipality intends to restore water levels that have dropped due to the heatwave.

It also wants to refurbish both the Newton reservoirs and Riverton water treatment plant.

Residents were informed of the water restrictions on Wednesday (11/12), the same day of implementation.

“These restrictions are aimed at improving levels at the Newton reservoirs, which have been depleted due to a high demand exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave,” said municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala.

Residents have taken to social media in frustration as they say they have been without water for almost two weeks prior to the water restriction implementation.

“When are we going to have proper water supply? You know this is a reactive instead of proactive (approach) and is negatively affecting the whole community. The water is dirty, in any case,” said Kimberley resident Willie Carelse on social media.

They also said water restrictions during a heatwave are unacceptable, and preparation could have been done before summer.

'Interruptions will be implemented daily'

The following restrictions are to be implemented according to the Water Services Act 108 of 1997 and Clause 31 of the Water and Sanitation Services Bylaw:

• watering of gardens, lawns, grassed areas, flowerbeds, sports fields, bowling greens, and similar areas;

• topping up of filling fountains and ornamental ponds;

• filling of swimming pools and paddling pools; and

• washing of paved areas, walls, roofs, buildings and other similar structures.

The interruptions will be implemented daily from 12:00 to 17:00, and 21:00 to 04:00.
