Vehicle theft at car washes on the rise─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:20 Tue, 19 Nov 2024
As the festive season draws near, criminals have started targeting cars at car washes.
Motorists often leave their cars at these businesses while running errands. Criminals have found new ways to commit vehicle theft by hijacking cars waiting to be washed or those already inside a car wash.
“After arriving at a car wash, unsuspecting customers often leave their cars and keys behind to shop and run errands,” said Fidelity ADT Head of Marketing and Communications, Charnel Hattingh. “Criminals then take advantage of the situation, claiming the vehicle as their own, getting into them, and driving off before any alarms are sounded.”
Five incidents of vehicle theft at car washes were reported on Gauteng’s West Rand last week, she said.
‘Ford Ranger is one of the vehicles identified as high-risk’
Business Tech reports the following vehicle models have been identified as high-risk for hijacking in South Africa: Ford Ranger, Hyundai i20, Nissan NP200, VW Polo, especially hatchbacks, and eight Toyota models: Corolla Cross, Corolla, Etios, Fortuner, Hilux, Prado, Land Cruiser, and RAV 4.
Fidelity has tips on how motorists can be cautious at car washes:
- Watch if you were followed to a car wash or if there are suspicious persons around.
- Don’t leave your car keys with the attendant when you are at a car wash.
- Report suspicious individuals hanging around car washes to the police or security providers in the area.
- Inform the attendant that only you will be collecting your vehicle.
- Always make sure you can see your car while it is being washed.
“While these incidents began locally, such tactics can spread quickly, making this a relevant concern for all motorists, we cannot allow bad elements to take advantage of our communities,” said Hattingh.
Meanwhile, Northern Cape police have noted the number of incidents relating to theft out of and from motor vehicles that have been reported.
“As we head to the festive season, the police requests the public to implement safety measures, so that they don’t fall victim to these crimes,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergio Kock.
‘Use parking areas with a parking attendant or supervision’
Safety tips to avoid theft out of motor vehicles:
- Do not leave your keys in the ignition.
- Keep valuable items such as laptops, handbags, shopping bags, cash, and cameras locked in the boot of your car.
- When driving in town always lock your doors and windows.
- Use parking areas with a parking attendant or supervision.
- At night, park in well-lit areas.
