Grade 12 learners from Meriti Secondary School in North West have been relocated to Swartruggens Combined School to complete their final examinations in a secure environment.

The decision, affecting 281 learners and ten teachers, was taken after a gang-related attack outside Meriti’s premises last week. The attack, involving an expelled and a suspended former learner, escalated onto the school grounds, leaving two pupils injured.

A learner seeking refuge at the school was pursued and stabbed by a gang of four, said North West Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane. In the ensuing chaos, another learner was stabbed on the premises.

Both injured learners received immediate medical attention. One sustained four stab wounds and is currently recovering at home. Molokwane confirmed the affected learners will be accommodated to complete their exams once they are fit to do so.

To prevent further disruptions, the Department of Education arranged for learners and teachers to be moved to the alternative venue in Swartruggens, where they will complete their examinations in a more controlled environment.

North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi reassured parents that measures have been put in place to support learners during this critical period.

“We have provided accommodation that allows learners to study efficiently, meals served three times daily, and 24-hour security to ensure their safety,” Motsumi said.

Meriti Secondary School, which has recently seen a rise in crime, has been assigned four full-time security personnel. These individuals are tasked with conducting morning searches and ensuring the overall safety of the school community.

Motsumi expressed her relief that the Grade 12 learners will now complete their examinations without further disturbances.

“This move demonstrates our commitment to prioritising the safety and well-being of our learners, especially during such a critical time in their academic journey,” Motsumi said.
