North West Education tightens security after another stabbing incident─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:33 Thu, 14 Nov 2024
The North West Department of Education has taken swift action in tightening security following yet another stabbing incident of two learners at Meriti Secondary School in Rustenburg.
The incidents, believed to be linked to gangsterism, have prompted the deployment of additional security personnel to the school.
Departmental spokesperson Mphata Molokwane confirmed that one of the learners, a grade 10 student, was attacked outside the school premises by a gang of four individuals on Tuesday (12/11). The gang, reportedly comprised of former learners who had been expelled or suspended, pursued the learner onto the school premises, where they stabbed another grade 9 learner.
Both learners were rushed to local hospitals for treatment. One of the learners sustained four stab wounds but is now recovering at home. The department has assured that the learners will be accommodated to complete their examinations once they have recovered.
Police were called to the scene to address the incidents and ensure the safety of the school community.
Meriti Secondary School came under the spotlight when the department, alongside police, conducted a surprise visit and uncovered various illicit items, including knives, space muffins, marijuana, cigarettes, and even an old police belt. Two learners from the same school were previously stabbed by former students, leading to their admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
These events have underscored the urgent need for continued efforts to combat crime and gang-related activities within schools.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, convened an urgent meeting with the school’s governing body (SGB), parents, and management on Wednesday (13/11) to address the crisis.
Motsumi announced the deployment of four security personnel, effective Thursday (14/11).
“The safety and well-being of our learners and educators are paramount. We have taken immediate action to deploy security personnel to safeguard the school premises and restore calm. I urge all school community members to remain calm and cooperate with the measures being put in place,” said Motsumi.

She further emphasised the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment for learning, particularly during the ongoing examination period.
The department has pledged to work closely with law enforcement and stakeholders to address school violence.
