Mangaung mayor backs Marumo Gallants to reignite Free State pride─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:33 Tue, 05 Nov 2024
The mayor of Mangaung is rooting for the Bloemfontein-based Marumo Gallants to bring back the pride of the Free State in the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Gregory Nthatisi expressed confidence that Gallants will make the Free State proud, celebrating the team’s hard-fought path to the semi-finals after defeating defending champions Stellenbosch FC with a decisive 1-0 win on Sunday (3/11) in the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.
Congratulating the team, Nthatisi highlighted the victory as a testament to Gallants’ determination, skill, and dedication. “Their achievement not only demonstrates their commitment to excellence but also brings immense pride to our city,” he stated. He further emphasised the positive economic implications for the metro.

“With this significant match ahead, we expect a substantial economic boost for the city. Hosting high-profile games not only showcases our rich sporting culture but also stimulates local businesses and generates vital economic growth opportunities,” said Nthatisi.
“As a city that holds sports close to its heart, we take great pride in supporting events that bring our community together and uplift the spirits of our residents.”
The Free State has endured economic stagnation for many years due to, among others, crumbling infrastructure and political instability. But the relocation of Marumo Gallants to Bloemfontein has revived hopes for many fans who dream of the club regaining Bloemfontein Celtic FC’s once-iconic status, restoring a sense of unity and pride.
Gallants has slowly been strengthening Bloemfontein’s reputation as a city for major sporting events. A June showdown between South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, and Mozambique saw massive turnout in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, though a later match against Congo was relocated to the Eastern Cape due to Toyota Cheetahs hosting the Toyota Challenge on the same date.
The Carling Knockout Cup semi-final between Gallants and Sundowns is set to kick off at 15:00 on Sunday (10/11) with large crowds expected at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.
Gallants coach, Dan Malesela, emphasised the importance of his players going into the game without fear to avoid grippling against the seven-time Premier Soccer League champions.
