The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 1 warning for severe weather across several regions in the Free State, North West, and the Northern Cape.

SAWS has warned of severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds in these areas. Residents are advised to be cautious, as these storms may bring a combination of hail, strong winds, and heavy downpours.

Lungile Makondo, a weather forecaster at the Bloemfontein office, informed OFM News that conditions, conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms, are expected.

This may result in a moderate likelihood of minor impacts, including strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, possible hail, and heavy rain, particularly in the central and western parts of the Free State, the central and western areas of North West, and the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

He further stated that these scattered storms are expected to develop on Thursday (17/10) at 14:00 and will start dissipating around 21:00 this evening.

The anticipated impacts include large hail in open areas, which could cause localised damage to nearby settlements or vehicles. Susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges may experience localised flooding. Additionally, falling trees due to strong winds could block minor roads.

How to stay safe?

People are encouraged to download the WeatherSmart app on their phones, scroll to the last page, and use two fingers to navigate the storm tracking feature.

Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors and keep a safe distance from metal objects. It’s important not to seek shelter under trees or tall structures.

Additionally, avoid activities like fishing or golfing, as both fishing rods and golf clubs are good conductors of electricity.
