Free State to host first regional Lego League tournament─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 14:52 Mon, 14 Oct 2024
The Free State will finally be hosting its first Lego League coding tournament this November.
The team aims to establish it as an annual tradition. Learners aged nine to 16 from various Free State schools will showcase their coding skills through Lego robots they have built.
“The aim and purpose of the tournament are to inspire and motivate learners to tackle or get interested in STEM-related subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEM-related fields by using coding and robotics and also promoting hands-on-learning,” said project manager Mpho Koaeana.

The Bohlokoa Foundation will still be accepting additional entries from schools till the end of this month while several teams from across the province have confirmed their participation.
“Following the regional competition, teams may have opportunities to advance to national (Johannesburg Science Bono) then from there they may go to the international events, depending on their performance.
“Additionally, the experience gained can be applied in future projects and competitions, enriching their learning journey,” added Koaeana.

Being the first competition of its kind in the Free State, this event represents a significant step in promoting robotics and STEM education in the region.
Fostering collaboration among schools, encouraging innovation, and raising awareness of the importance of these fields for future careers.
“Participants will gain valuable skills in coding, engineering, and teamwork. They will also build confidence through public presentations and competitions, fostering a passion for STEM subjects that can influence their educational and career choices.”
The competition is set to take place on Saturday 23 November at a venue yet to be disclosed.
The Bohlokoa Foundation encourages collaboration among educators, parents, and local businesses about this event and other coding and robotics events to happen in future.
