Six primary school learners and their taxi driver are recovering in hospital after their driver lost control of the taxi and drove into a wall.

“The female taxi driver was transporting primary school learners to school when she allegedly lost control of the taxi and drove into a wall in Hulana Street in Galeshewe,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Molefi Shemane.

“The incident occurred at around 07:00, and no serious injuries were reported. The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.”

Meanwhile, a foreign national is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court on Friday (16/8) on a charge of culpable homicide, driving under the influence, and dangerous and negligent driving following the death of the third victim.

Collin Nhlanga (39) was remanded in custody on Thursday, 4 July, when he made a brief court appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court.

Nhlanga allegedly caused an accident when he crashed into the back of a taxi that had stopped at a red traffic light in Homestead. The taxi was filled with PA members returning from a convention in Kathu.

OFM News reported a Nissan Navara is said to have crashed into a pedestrian, but the driver drove off without stopping.

‘Three people have passed away following the accident’

“After the accused fled the scene of the [first] accident, he bumped into the back of a taxi standing at a red robot in Homestead, causing the taxi to overturn,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergio Kock. “All 14 occupants were taken to hospital, some with minor injuries, and others with major injuries.”

In total, three people have died following the accident, while one of the men who were in the taxi was in a critical condition. He may not walk again.
