“SASSA has conducted an internal review to ensure all safety protocols are adhered to.”
A client passed away at the SASSA offices in Bloemfontein while waiting to apply for a disability grant and child support grant.
The Free State Social Development spokesperson, Thembile Nqabeni, reported that the client's name cannot be disclosed for safety reasons.
‘The deceased had a heart condition and was receiving medication’
The incident happened at approximately 12:20 on Monday (1/7) when a fellow visitor noticed that the client was not moving and promptly informed an official. Emergency personnel and police were contacted immediately, however, the client was declared dead on the scene. Nqabeni stated that the family members of the deceased were collected at their home and brought to the SASSA offices.

Upon arrival, the family informed officials that the deceased had a heart condition and was receiving medication. Following all necessary protocols, the body was taken to the mortuary with the family’s approval.
The Free State MEC for Social Development, Mathabo Leeto, expressed profound sadness over the incident and extended her heartfelt condolences to the community, family, and friends of the deceased.
“As the department, our immediate thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. We will dispatch our social workers and officials to provide psycho-social support and counselling,” Leeto said.
Leeto also urged the community, friends, and family to cooperate fully with authorities during the investigations and examinations surrounding the incident. She emphasised that the safety and well-being of clients and staff are of the utmost importance to SASSA.
