Sasolburg's council to decide future of DA mayor, speaker─── LUCKY NKUYANE 05:37 Thu, 28 Sep 2023
“The mayor failed to show decisive leadership and steer the municipality in the right direction. Instead, the municipality remained stagnant and regressed.”
The Fezile Dabi District Municipal Council, which includes the Sasolburg-based Metsimaholo Municipality in the Free State, will on Thursday (28/9) decide the future of both the DA mayor and speaker during a motion of no confidence.
The 31-member council – consisting of 16 ANC members – will reconvene today to decide the fate of Mayor Dennis Khasudi and Speaker Sidney Pittaway of the DA, who are leading the ANC municipality. Last week the council failed to convene after they failed to form a quorum as the ANC members failed to show up.
The EFF tabled a motion of no confidence against the duo. The red berets are accusing the DA mayor and speaker of infringing legislation and non-compliance to certain regulations governing the municipality and the council.
Submitting the motion against the two, the EFF Fezile Dabi Regional Chairperson, April Motaung, said: “The mayor failed to show decisive leadership and steer the municipality in the right direction. Instead, the municipality remained stagnant and regressed.”
The council has 31 councillors, of whom 16 are ANC. The EFF and DA have eight seats each, while the FF Plus has one. The municipality was one of those that the ANC failed to win with an outright majority.
The DA provincial leader and constituency leader of the party, Roy Jankielsohn, told OFM News that he would only be able to give a comment after the proceedings.
