Free State MEC appointed as acting provincial premier─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 08:33 Tue, 05 Sep 2023
In the absence of the Free State Provincial Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, MEC Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, responsible for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, has been appointed to act in his position.
Media Strategy and Liaison for the provincial government, Palesa Chubisi, said Letsoha-Mathae will act as premier while Dukwana is in China on an official visit. She was sworn in on Saturday (2/9) by Deputy Judge President of the High Court of South Africa, Free State division, Johannes Daffue. She will hold the reigns until Thursday (14/9).
In June, when Dukwana took off for a medical procedure, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Moses Ketso Makume, was appointed to act as premier.

“MEC Makume will, as Acting Premier during this period, be responsible for the performance of the duties of the Premier and the concomitant delegated powers attached to the said post,” said the spokesperson of the premier, Sello Dithebe, at the time.
Dukwana was elected as the premier on 24 February 2023 following his election as the provincial ANC chairperson earlier this year. Makume was elected as Dukwana’s successor on 14 March 2023. Dukwana was previously the MEC of Cogta and Human Settlements, which is now Makume’s portfolio. Letsoha-Mathae was also appointed as MEC on the same day as Makume. She also happens to be the ANC Women's League's treasurer-general.
