The overnight condition had improved regarding the spread of fires at the hotspots.
A Free State fire association is on Sunday (27/8) set to conduct the final reconcilement following the spread of veldfires across the province. On Friday (25/8) fires were reported at Soutpan, Brandfort, Vredefort, Zastron, and Boshof, among others.
Some of these fires, in areas such as Dealesville and Soutpan, were contained while fires at Brandfort, Fouriesburg, and Ladybrand remained active.
Johann Savage Breytenbach from the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association on Saturday said the overnight condition had improved regarding the spread of fires at the hotspots. Various teams working on these fires were recalled and remotely monitored.
As windspeed decreased, temperatures dropped, and humidity levels increased overnight, most fires were expected to be contained by Saturday morning.
“However, the mop–up phase of fire suppression has not been implemented and flare-ups are highly likely to occur as the conditions change.”
