A 26-year-old has appeared in court for the murder of his 90-year-old grandmother who he lived with.
It is alleged that community members came together to put out a fire after noticing the blazing house on the evening of 9 June 2023, in Butterworth.
Nongenile Sobetwa's charred body was discovered on a chair behind the door.
Thulani Sobetwa was located by the community, who violently beat him. They alleged that he was the one who set the home on fire.
An inquest docket was opened and he was detained for questioning.
Sobetwa was charged with murder on Tuesday 13 June 2023.
He is remanded in custody and will make a formal bail application at his next court appearance on 22 June 2023.
