Accused infrastructure thieves to remain in custody | News Article

Two thieves who were caught with a motor believed to belong to the Chris Hani Park's Sewerage Pump Station will remain in holding cells after their first appearance was postponed.

According to the Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the two men - Mbulelo Mpoipoi and Mohau Fanyane - will appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Thursday 1 December 2022.

They were apprehended on 22 November after they were found in possession of a big motor of the pump station, belonging to the Matjhabeng Municipality, which is under construction at Chris Hani Park in Bronville.

The reason for their arrest is because the two accused could not give officers documents to explain why they are in possession of the property. Therefore, the motor together with their bakkie were seized. “A case of theft was registered and an investigation was assigned to Hennita Motaung. The suspects were charged and brought to the Local Magistrate's Court. The case was postponed for bail application,” he added.

Thakeng concluded that the District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Lerato Molale, applauded this joint operation which led to these arrests and seizure. “We regard these arrests as a breakthrough as the destruction of the infrastructure will never be tolerated.”
