Suspected baby murderer in North West denied bail─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 13:48 Wed, 23 Nov 2022
A suspect (38) in the murder case of a five-month-old baby will remain in police custody after being denied bail by the Leeudoringstad Magistrate’s Court in North West on Wednesday.
Lazarus Chaka Hambone was arrested on Sunday 6 November 2022 for the alleged murder of the baby boy in Extension 4, Kgakala Township, in Leeudoringstad.
North West National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said Hambone was denied bail. His case has been postponed to 17 January 2022.
“His bail application was rejected by the Leeudoringstad Magistrate’s Court. The state managed to persuade the court, detailing reasons for opposing bail. One reason is the fact that the accused is a parolee on a murder he committed in 2011,” Mamothame added.
He said according to police reports, a 16-year-old mother of the infant had an argument with Hambone on Saturday 5 November 2022, while carrying the baby on her back. He then went outside and came back with a spade. He tried to assault his niece but ended up hitting the baby boy. Mamothame further says the baby was taken to a local clinic where he was transported to the Wolmaransstad Hospital. He was ultimately transferred to the Tshepong Hospital where he died due to head injuries. He further adds that the suspect will remain in police custody until the matter is concluded.
