Free State Health MEC, Montseng Tsiu, has added her voice to the growing national calls for pit bulls, perceived to be bloodthirsty, to be removed from communities.

This came after receiving news that another child, the three-year-old boy Keketso Saule, was mauled to death by two vicious dogs, including a pit bull, in his neighbour's yard.

Tsiu raised concerns over the death caused by this bloodthirsty dog breed.

“Each day we learn of yet another death whilst these dogs bring nothing but more sorrow to many homes who have lost their loved ones to this vicious and bloodthirsty dog breed. It is possible that there are many more unpublished and unaccounted deaths that may have been caused over time by this vicious breed,” said Tsiu.

During the funeral of the late Olebogeng Mosime, who was also killed by a pit bull a week earlier, the deputy mayor of Mangaung Metro Municipality, Mapaseka Nkoane-Mothibi, said as of January 2023, the city would require dog owners to have a licence and also to have some form of training to be the owner of any dog.

Meanwhile, the provincial Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says Emergency Medical Service personnel who attended the incident of the 3-year-old Saule, have been traumatised by the incident and have been offered time off.

“The Emergency Medical Services crew that attended to this gruesome incident couldn’t hold back their tears. They have as a result been afforded time off. They will be attending counselling today, Monday 21 November 2022, with the Department of Health Social Workers who are deployed to the Lejweleputswa District.”

Mvambi says MEC Tsiu appealed to the owners of this breed to surrender these dogs and help to end the carnage. She also sent her condolences to the family of Keketso Saule, relatives, loved ones and many more that this horrific incident has touched.

Residents of Phomolong in Hennenman have since killed one of the two pit bulls that mauled 3-year-old Saule to death.

It's understood that the police rescued the owner of the two dogs from residents who were angered after witnessing the incident.
