The University of the Free State (UFS) students’ initiative to assist Jagersfontein residents when they saw the need, has been recognised by the Department of Social Development.

The department’s MEC, Mamiki Qabathe, says she was humbled by the selflessness of these students who volunteered to assist victims of Jagersfontein in their time of need. She says most of the work that was done by these students included cleaning homes that were not damaged beyond repair.

“I was humbled. Mainly because it was not our request for them to go there, it was their own initiative. To see young people who are still considerate, who are still feeling that we can play a positive role in helping others.”

She appeals to the youth to reach out to their peers who have been affected by this tragedy because they need clothes that will be appropriate for them. She says most elderly people and children have been privileged to get assistance in needs that are beyond food supply, and the gap felt by the Jagersfontein community was addressed by the UFS students.

OFM News previously reported that students from the University of the Free State (UFS) will be visiting Jagersfontein for the second time on Friday 14 October 2022. They say they will be using their hands to make a difference while appealing to the public to assist with other resources.
