The Free State Department of Social Development is encouraging churches to be actively involved in fighting social illnesses.

MEC Mamiki Qabathe attended a gala dinner at the Methodist Church of Southern Africa on Sunday 2 October, 2022, to address the role of churches in fighting social injustices. The Mokala Montle District in Mangaung organised a gala dinner where Qabathe was given a platform to emphasise the important role that churches would play if they got involved in fighting gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), alcohol and drug abuse, gangsterism and other social illness.

“Qabathe encourages churches to not only focus on services but also become developmental centers in order to assist the government in dealing with these social ills, stating that churches and the government have the same vision of making sure that people live in a fair and peaceful society”.

OFM News previously reported that The Free State government has taken major strides towards assisting victims of GBVF in the province. The scourge of femicide continues in the province and the country as a whole. OFM News previously reported that at least 3,811 victims were provided with psychosocial support, with 167 women admitted to the safe house and five shelters.

On 26 August 2022, the Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela, together with the MEC for Social Development Mamiki Qabathe, launched another shelter for victims of GBVF in Sasolburg.
