Letsema campaign launched in Northern Cape─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 10:15 Sat, 01 Oct 2022
The ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, will lead the launch of the ANC’s nationwide Letsema Campaign in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Saturday.
The campaign was first launched in Bloemfontein, Free State, in April.
The Letsema Campaign is about putting the ruling party’s leaders at the forefront to help clean up the streets of the provinces and clean-up provincial governments of dishonest individuals.
It is also aimed at dealing with the shortfalls of service delivery and corruption, and reconnect residents with the party moving forward.
Activities in the province will start off with a house donation to Martha Louw, who turns 82, in Donkerhoek’s Ward 10.
It is understood that Ramaphosa had promised Louw a house the last time he was in the province. The house was initially handed over on 30 September 2022 by the provincial MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Bentley Vass, and MEC for Social Development, Nontobeko Vilakazi.
As the morning goes on, Ramaphosa along with other ANC leaders, will have a walk-about around Tommy Morebudi, Ward 10. Then they will commence with a clean-up campaign of the Tommy Morebudi Park. From 12:30 Ramaphosa will lead engagements with the media and the community of Northern Cape at Protea Hotel.
The campaign was first launched in Bloemfontein, Free State in April. Like in the Northern Cape, Ramaphosa alongside other Free State ANC political heads saw the handover of a house to a family which lost most of their belongings when the house caught on fire. Ramaphosa, in his speech at Toka Primary School in Turflaagte previously said the Letsema campaign would lead to a cleaner City of Roses and would restore the Metro to its former glory. The ANC’s intention to clean up the country comes two years ahead of the 2024 national elections.

Democratic Alliance leader in the Free State, Roy Jankielson, meanwhile alleged that a house recently handed over in the Free State was paid for by the Free State Provincial Government.
He said the ANC’s leaders created the impression that the ANC has paid for the house. The property was allegedly allocated to a beneficiary of the Free State Provincial Government, and the alleged cost was over R130 000.
Jankielson stated that the ANC has created an impression – through their social media posts (and also handing it over during the Letsema launch) that the ANC is the one who has delivered the house, not the Free State Provincial Government. He has also alleged that the ANC has made no attempts to remedy the perception that the house was paid for by the ANC and not the provincial government.

In response to the allegations, the provincial spokesperson for the ANC, Oupa Khoabane, said the ANC-led government built the house that was handed over during the launch of the ANC’s nationwide Letsema Campaign. The Free State provincial government’s spokesperson, Sello Pietersen, told OFM News that the provincial premier, Sisi Ntombela is aware of the allegations the DA made, and should the Public Protector’s Office investigate, she is willing to subject herself to cooperation.
“Premier Ntombela remains committed to the provision of services to the people of the province, including through the provision of housing to those who need and qualify for them. The premier appreciates and always upholds the highest forms of good governance and transparency,” he added.
